BitDefender has just released a free removal tool that allows users infected with Win32.Worm.Stuxnet.

This tool is capable of removing all known variants of Win32.Worm.Stuxnet, as well as the rootkit drivers that are used to conceal critical components of the worm.

Win32.Worm.Stuxnet is a new breed of e-threats that emerged around mid-July. Although it infects all Windows-based systems alike, it primarily targets supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems which run the Siemens WinCC software.

The worm spreads by taking advantage of a multitude of 0-day exploits in the current versions of Windows. Moreover, it can execute itself from an infected removable medium as soon as the .lnk file on the drive has been read by the operating system.

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability results in the injection of a backdoor, as well as the installation of two rootkits that will conceal both the .lnk files and the accompanying .tmp files.

BitDefender has added generic detection covering all variants of Stuxnet as of July 19, thus protecting its customers since day zero. Computer users that are not running a BitDefender security solution can now eliminate Stuxnet from the infected systems by running the attached removal tool. The tool can be run on both 32- and 64-bit installations and will eliminate both the rootkit drivers and the worm.

Avira’s IT security specialists have discovered a wave of infections whereby forums and servers in the Internet are infected by means of a link to harmful JavaScript. This exposes surfers visiting the hacked pages at risk to an infection from fraudulent antivirus software

Tettnang, 01 October 2009 – The WebGuard included in Avira’s Premium and Professional products already blocks the website from where the dangerous JavaScript gets delivered.

While there were only a few server infections with the malicious link to Russian servers yesterday, Wednesday, Google’s search engine now indicates there are over one hundred infected systems and the trend is rapidly growing. Users should therefore take care while surfing the net and react to alerts of their antivirus solution.

Avira AntiVir detects the harmful code that infects unprotected systems as TR/FraudPack.ams. The malware that gets downloaded by TR/FraudPack.ams is detected proactively as TR/Crypt.ZPACK.Gen and as TR/FakeAV.RK with the current VDF update. Users of Avira security solutions are therefore protected from this threat. Further details will be available in Avira’s TechBlog soon.

Malware disables a computer’s Internet connection and requires a costly release code for repair purposes

Tettnang, 02 December 2009 – A harmful virus is currently in circulation that disconnects computers from the Internet and only releases the connection again after a code has been entered that can only be obtained from an expensive premium SMS service. Avira has been aware of the malware for some time and protects its users accordingly.

The blackmail Trojan currently being reported by the media is disguised as an installation program for a download manager. If a user runs the program, however, all he will see is a message in Russian claiming he has violated the conditions for use. The malware then blocks the computer’s Internet connection and requires the user to obtain a release code using a costly premium SMS service.

Avira’s security solutions detect this malware as TR/Ransom.SMSer.QM. The virus definition files have been able to detect the blackmail Trojan since version 7.1.6.177, dated 2 November 2009, so that users of Avira Security Solutions are thus protected from the danger.

Tettnang, 15 December 2009 – Currently malicious PDF documents find their way into the mailboxes of internet users. They abuse a new security hole in Adobe Reader and Acrobat to infect the computer with malware.

Adobe is investigating the yet unknown security vulnerability. Avira users are already protected though: The antimalware solutions from the german IT security company detect the malicious PDF files generically without updates as HTML/Malicious.PDF.Gen.

When opened with the vulnerable Adobe programs, the PDF file injects code which downloads further malware. The embedded JavaScript in the document checks if the version of Adobe Reader is 8 or higher.

The trojan that Avira detects as TR/Drop.Agent.DT with VDF version 7.10.01.243 gets stored as “winver32.exe” in the windows directory. It downloads 3 malicious files which Avira detect as BDS/Ientlcp.A, TR/Agent.faa and TR/Agent.HO. Until Adobe releases Updates for Reader and Acrobat, users should be careful and don’t open PDF documents which they receive unexpectedly.
