Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces improvements to the system which processes samples of potentially malicious objects received by email from Internet users.

Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus laboratory is implementing a completely new level of malicious program processing. As of 11 February 2010, the system that processes messages sent to the address newvirus@kaspersky.com will operate in automatic mode based on an improved heuristic detection mechanism. In addition, a reply to each user message will be sent immediately, providing information about the status of the potentially malicious program in Kaspersky Lab’s antivirus databases. If a malicious program sent to the above address is not yet detected by the company’s products, the user will also be notified when its detection is added to antivirus databases.

Kaspersky Lab is continually developing its internal infrastructure to improve the quality of malicious threat detection by the company’s products. The new system for the processing of potentially malicious programs will significantly enhance the antivirus laboratory’s effectiveness.

“The stream of malicious files is constantly increasing, but at the same time we can see that a significant proportion of them are variants of known families that can be automatically classified based on their behavior and many other factors,” said Nikita Shvetsov, Kaspersky Lab’s Director of Anti-Malware Research. “Optimizing our internal infrastructure has allowed us to shift even more simple and routine operations from people to robots. As a result, virus analysts are able to spend more time on handling those cases which cannot be processed automatically.”

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces that its Kaspersky Business Space Security 6.0 Release 2 product suite has received the highest overall rating in a comparative test conducted by Cascadia Labs. The test was designed to demonstrate how well security products meet the requirements of the corporate market, including ease of installation and administration, reporting functions, policy enforcement, and providing the best protection with minimal impact on end-user system performance.

Specifically, solutions were tested for their ability to meet the requirements of businesses that ranged from small organizations to medium-sized enterprises. Kaspersky Business Space Security – recently enhanced with Release 2 upgrades that provide stronger management and performance – was tested alongside five competitive solutions. These corporate endpoint product suites included offerings from Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Sophos and ESet.

Kaspersky Business Space Security 6.0 Release 2 earned the best overall score, and achieved the highest score in four of the five evaluation categories: Performance, Installation & Configuration, Effectiveness, and Policies & Management. According to Cascadia Labs experts, the updated version of Kaspersky Business Space Security 6.0 is “a nice choice for companies of all sizes,” citing the product’s ease-of-installation and management across large networks, protection from Web-based threats, and overall speed. The test lab’s independent experts emphasized that among the participating solutions, Kaspersky Business Space Security 6.0 Release 2 is “among the least complicated and fastest products to deploy in an Active Directory environment,” making the product’s installation and configuration significantly easier, while providing excellent flexibility in defining group security policies.

Kaspersky Lab also earned top marks for performance, demonstrating minimal impact on the time required to reboot the computer or open large files, as well as high-speed initial scanning capabilities. It also showed a much larger improvement in performance than competitive products when performing follow-up on-demand scans. “The Kaspersky endpoint security suite
excelled on our performance and effectiveness tests and was a breeze to install,” said Cascadia Labs experts.

For testing, each solution was installed on a test network consisting of a dedicated server running under Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and workstations running under Windows XP and Windows 7. For more detailed information about the testing results, please read the Cascadia Labs report entitled “Practical Business Endpoint Security”, available at http://www.cascadialabs.com/reports/Practical_Business_Security_November_2009.pdf.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces that Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 has demonstrated exceptionally high levels of protection in testing carried out by the respected German laboratory AV-Test as part of their Real World trial.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 was subjected to real-life conditions using the latest malware in accordance with a custom methodology developed especially for the purpose by AV-Test.

The trial included 12 popular Internet security solutions from different vendors. Each solution was subjected to approximately 10 new pieces of ‘zero-day’ malware every 24 hours, (i.e., malware that had only just appeared on the Internet) over a 60-day test period. The full set of malicious software used for testing comprised some 600 active samples, including exploits and malware distributed by email.

The solutions were permitted to apply their full range of protective technologies, including filtration of blacklisted URLs and applications, behavioral analysis, signature-based detection etc. It should be noted that traditionally, when analyzing an antivirus solution’s performance only one type of protective technology is used, such as signature-based scanning (reactive protection) or proactive protection modules.

The effectiveness of the protection offered was assessed according to two categories: ‘Malware Detection’ and ‘Malware Blocking’. The criteria applied included malware detection rates, the degree to which the destructive activity of the malware was blocked and the number of false positives recorded against a collection of harmless programs.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 achieved a high score in the Real World test, coming second in the ‘Malware Detection’ category (97.5%) and third in the ‘Malware Blocking’ category (89.8%) and recording very few false positives.

“Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 achieved excellent results in the Real World test because it takes advantage of a unique synergy of technologies that effectively complement and enhance each other,” said Director of Anti-Malware Research Nikita Shvetsov. “We believe that the near future of antivirus solution testing lies with tests which analyze, in real-life conditions, the effectiveness of the entire integrated set of technologies included in each product and which model user behavior. Today, with tens of thousands of new malicious programs appearing on the Internet every day, only such tests are capable of demonstrating the real level of user protection. This is why we fully support the AV-Test laboratory which develops and implements innovative methods of dynamic testing.”
