Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the launch of Kaspersky PURE, an integrated solution designed to protect home networks.

Kaspersky PURE is Kaspersky Lab’s flagship solution in the home user product range. It offers a new approach to the provision of computer security by combining a host of protection technologies in a single package. Users are reliably shielded from external attacks, operator errors and data loss as a result of computer failure and can enjoy all the benefits that modern PCs and the Internet have to offer, safe in the knowledge that they are fully protected.
The program is designed to appeal to the advanced user, who will appreciate the solution’s configuration options and extended functionality, as well as to those who simply need an easy-to-use product, for example families with several computers.

Kaspersky PURE includes such cutting-edge technologies as Application Control, which provides online protection by allotting programs a security rating based on information from Kaspersky Lab’s reputation databases; Safe Run mode, which allows suspicious programs to be launched without damaging the system; and behavioral analysis modules to detect suspicious or dangerous program behavior. The product also includes important security features such as rootkit detection, the use of a virtual keyboard and an option for creating a rescue disk.

With Kaspersky PURE’s My Control Center, a user can view the security status of any computers on the home network. It is the first solution in our product range to allow a user to launch different tasks such as vulnerability scanning or to configure parental control rules remotely. It can also reduce the volume of Internet traffic by downloading updates to a chosen computer, which then distributes the data to the other PCs on the network. The intuitive interface allows a user to control all aspects of their home network security and to fix any problems as they arise.

Kaspersky PURE provides additional options to enhance a user’s digital security even more, including: the possibility to encrypt data to prevent theft or unauthorized access, a centralized password storage system and a ‘file shredder’ utility that makes it impossible to restore deleted data.

Kaspersky PURE’s Security+ toolkit will help the user to fine-tune operating system and browser security settings. The product analyzes those settings that are either hidden or generally overlooked and prompts the user to take action if any of them pose a threat to computer security.

Kaspersky PURE also includes a dedicated module to help the user create backup copies of data and restore it if needed. The module offers flexible configuration: scheduled backups of all data, or backups of certain files or folders that are of particular importance. Selective backups allow only those files that were modified since they were last saved to be backed up, preserving backup disk storage space. Previous versions of files can be saved at specific restore points, thus allowing them to be recovered in the event of accidental data deletion.

Kaspersky PURE’s encryption feature protects against confidential data leaks. A user can create special, protected containers to store their sensitive data in. Each container is encrypted and password-protected for enhanced protection. Encryption and decryption of the data in the container is performed on the fly and does not affect the system’s operation. Only encrypted data is saved to the hard disk.

For those with children, Kaspersky PURE’s Parental Control module provides a flexible policy for controlling Internet, Computer and IM usage and content. It helps parents to regulate access to specific programs and the Internet and allows or blocks websites and file downloads according to predefined categories. Parents can now supervise their children’s contacts and activities on all the most popular social networks, such as: Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, etc.

Kaspersky PURE includes a Password Manager program that can save the user an awful lot of time. This feature allows credentials such as passwords and logins to be encrypted and saved to your PC and most importantly, it automatically inserts them for you during the login process. It can also complete lengthy forms using data stored in the system’s memory, for example, telephone numbers, postal addresses, email addresses, etc. Along with passwords, the solution can also store other confidential data which can be added to the system with the help of the Safe Notes feature. The module can run on any PC without installation by using a suitably prepared portable USB device. In addition to the regular text-based key, access can be gained to the password database based on the unique characteristics of a Bluetooth/USB device, with an additional PIN code in case the device is used by somebody other than the intended user.

Kaspersky PURE has an intuitive, user-friendly interface from which most of the important options can be enabled with just a few clicks of the mouse.

“Security solutions have always developed in line with the evolution of digital threats. The emergence of the first computer viruses prompted the development of the early antivirus products. The arrival of the first web-borne threats gave impetus to the development of Internet Security-class solutions. Now that it has become common for many users to store their digital assets in electronic format, a need has arisen for new types of comprehensive solutions that offer protection against all types of digital threats and mitigate the risks to our digital assets,” said Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of Kaspersky Lab. “We are pleased to offer Kaspersky PURE, our new solution, to the entire user community. This product incorporates a unique package of state-of-the-art technologies, offering reliable protection from digital pollution of all types. With Kaspersky PURE you no longer have to be an expert in order to keep your digital life neat and tidy – our new solution will do the job for you.”

More detailed information about Kaspersky PURE is available at Kaspersky Lab’s corporate site. Licenses for 1, 2 and 5 computers will be available from 2 November, 2010.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 has received a prestigious VB100 award from the authoritative British magazine Virus Bulletin. A second Kaspersky Lab product, Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations, also successfully passed the test and received a VB100 certificate.

Full details of the comparative tests in which Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 achieved one of the best results for malware detection and won its first VB100 award were published in Virus Bulletin’s August 2010 edition. The tests, which saw 54 popular antivirus products put through their paces, were conducted on a Windows Vista Business Edition SP2 platform.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 neutralized 100% of the polymorphic malware used during testing and all the programs from the In-the-Wild collection while running in ‘on-demand scanning’ and ‘real-time protection’ modes.

Kaspersky Lab’s solution also neutralized the vast majority of the Trojans, worms and bots that it encountered. Both products demonstrated very high RAP (Reactive and Proactive) detection levels: 92-96% in the case of Kaspersky Internet Security, and 88-91% in the case of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0, notably higher than the results for products of other vendors such as Symantec and McAfee. Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 did not produce a single false positive throughout the entire test. Virus Bulletin’s report also stated that “the product’s interface is well thought out and easy-to-use”.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 is one of Kaspersky Lab’s newest consumer products and takes a preventative approach to protection. It monitors and evaluates all types of potential threats and prevents any harmful activity, allowing the user to enjoy an even safer online experience. The product securely isolates any untrusted URLs and potentially hazardous areas of the World Wide Web from the user’s system, letting the user work in a secure environment, free from digital threats and unwanted information. The protection system does not restrict the user’s activity at all and is designed to ensure that the user’s flow of data and communication channels remain secure. Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 employs a whole host of new and improved technologies, many of which are unique to Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the detection of a new family of computer worms that are spreading via numerous instant messaging clients. What makes the worms distinct and highly unusual for this class of program is the fact that they are multilingual and capable of infecting users via several IM clients simultaneously, including Yahoo! Messenger, Skype, Paltalk Messenger, ICQ, Windows Live Messenger, Google Talk and the XFire client for gamers.

Four variants of this worm have so far been detected by experts at Kaspersky Lab, who have named the family IM-Worm.Win32.Zeroll. Once it penetrates a computer, it looks in the contact list of any IM client present and sends itself to all the addresses it finds. Infection occurs when a user follows what they think is a hyperlink to an interesting picture, that in fact leads to a malicious file. The link appears in an instant message sent by an infected machine.

The fact that it is multilingual also makes the new family of IM worms stand out. IM-Worm.Win32.Zeroll uses 13 different languages, including English, German, Spanish and Portuguese, sending users in various countries messages in a language that they will understand. At the present time, Mexico, Brazil, Peru and the USA have seen the greatest numbers of infections, but many instances have also been recorded in Africa, India and European countries, particularly Spain.

IM-Worm.Win32.Zeroll has backdoor functionality, which means it can gain control of a computer without the user’s knowledge. Once it has penetrated a system, the worm contacts a remote command and control center. After receiving its instructions from the center via IRC, IM-Worm.Win32.Zeroll starts downloading other malicious programs. Interestingly, this new breed of IM worm connects to different IRC channels depending on the country and the instant messaging clients installed on the computer. This means a hacker controlling a network of infected computers can classify them according to country and IM client and send out different commands, which is useful, for example, when distributing targeted spam.

“It appears that the worm’s creators are currently in the early stages of their criminal activities,” said Dmitry Bestuzhev, Kaspersky Lab’s Regional Expert for Latin America. “They are infecting as many machines as they can in order to get good offers from other crooks for such things as pay per install, spam and so on.”

All Kaspersky Lab products successfully detect and neutralize the new family of IM worms.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky PURE, its comprehensive home network protection solution, came first in tests designed to measure the effectiveness of the parental control modules of ten of the industry’s leading security solutions.

In June 2010, and for the first time in the industry’s history, the respected independent Russian information and analytics center, Anti-Malware, conducted testing on the parental control modules of ten of the leading protection solutions for home networks and Internet users. The aim of the tests was to determine just how effective each solution was at filtering out unwanted content. The solutions were installed on local computers running 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7 with Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 as the browser.

Each solution had to block access to the same set of adult sites. The test used 2,400 links to unwanted resources taken from the popular search engines Yandex, Google and Bing. The search requests were in both Russian and English and used adult content keywords. Eight hundred links were selected from each search engine’s results, four hundred in Russian and four hundred in English.

Kaspersky PURE demonstrated the best results in the test and deservedly received a Parental Control award. Kaspersky Lab’s solution provided the best overall level of filtration for links to unwanted sites – 96%. The filtration of resources resulting from requests in Russian was 95% and as high as 97% for those in English, considerably surpassing the results achieved by the other solutions, all of which failed to reach the 90% mark. Kaspersky PURE was the number one solution for filtering both Russian and English websites, which guarantees that it is highly effective in protecting both Russian and English-speaking users.

“We pay considerable attention to developing parental control technologies as we believe that it is crucial to protect children and teenagers against unwanted Internet content,” said Andrey Nikishin, Director of Cloud & Content Technologies Research for Kaspersky Lab. “Kaspersky PURE is both effective and easy-to-use. It helps parents to be firm and at the same time flexible when labeling sites and defining the subjects to which access can be granted.”

More information about the tests is available at: www.anti-malware-test.com.

Kasperksy Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, has detected a second piece of malware, categorized as a Trojan-SMS, which targets smartphones running on the Android platform.

In an attempt to infect as many devices as possible, cybercriminals are distributing the new malware via the Russian-language sites that come out on top of searches for pornographic videos. Revealingly, the owners of these adult content sites are deliberately prompting Android users to download the new Trojan, while users of other platforms receive the desired content.

As with its predecessor, the latest Trojan, named Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.b, masquerades as a media player. A smartphone can only be infected if the user manually installs the application. Users of smartphones running Android are asked to download the pornplayer.apk application from an infected webpage in order to view adult content videos. The installation file is only 16.4 KB and during installation the Trojan seeks the user’s consent to send SMS messages – a requirement that a media player is very unlikely to need.

Once the user launches the fake application, Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.b begins sending SMS messages to a premium rate number without the user’s knowledge. The messages cost $6 each, resulting in hefty sums being transferred from the user’s account to that of the cybercriminals.

“Android users should pay close attention to the services that an application seeks permission to access,” said Denis Maslennikov, Mobile Research Group Manager at Kaspersky Lab. “Automatically permitting a new application to access every service that it says it needs to means you could end up with malicious or unwanted applications doing all sorts of things without requesting any additional information.”

The code insideTrojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.b is similar to that of Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a – the first Android Trojan-SMS that was detected by Kaspersky Lab experts a month ago. This suggests that both of these malicious applications were authored by one and the same person, or group of people.

IDC analysts report that Android mobile device vendors have displayed the most dramatic growth in sales among all smartphone vendors worldwide. Kaspersky Lab’s experts predict that more malicious programs targeting devices running on the Android platform are sure to emerge in the near future and are currently making every effort to develop security technologies and solutions to protect this operating system.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 has been awarded Approved status by the respected research laboratory AV-Comparatives following comprehensive comparative testing of four popular mobile security suites.

AV-Comparatives, an Austrian research laboratory, has published a review of four popular security solutions for smartphones based on comparative testing conducted in August 2010. The performance of the following product features were analyzed: “Virus protection”, “Firewall”, “Theft Protection” including “SMS Lock” and “GPS Find”, “Parental Controls” and “Encryption”. The Kaspersky Lab product was successful in each area of the comparison, demonstrating stable and reliable performance across its entire operational range, earning it the coveted title Approved.

The AV-Comparatives review emphasizes that Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 has a well thought-out and user-friendly interface. According to AV-Comparatives, “The user interface is clearly laid out and easy to understand.” “A big plus point is the information management. The interface for the configuration has been well designed, and tool tips provide assistance. These are easy to understand and do not require any specialist knowledge. Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 is the ideal solution for responsible end users, and includes a variety of well-thought-out services at a very reasonable price.”

Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 protects the smartphone and the data stored on it in the event that the device is lost or stolen. The product supports the remote blocking of a lost smartphone, the wiping of its memory and the capability to locate it using the GPS module built into the phone. In addition, Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 protects the confidentiality of contacts, call and message logs and safeguards the user from unwanted calls, SMS messages and mobile malware. It also provides data encryption and supports the restriction of unwanted calls and messages on a child’s smartphone.

More detailed information on the AV-Comparatives review can be found on the laboratory’s website: www.av-comparatives.org.

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces the release of an article titled “Antivirus weather forecast: cloudy” by Yury Mashevsky, a Strategic Technology Expert for the Company. This article is the first in a series devoted to “cloud” technologies in the antivirus industry.

We use the term antivirus “cloud” to refer to the infrastructure that an antivirus company uses in order to process information obtained from the computers of those who use a specific personal product which can identify new, as yet undetectable threats, in addition to performing a number of other tasks. Meanwhile, the user’s archiving and data processing technologies remain hidden. The antivirus program sends a request into the cloud to see if there is any information available about a particular program, activity, link, or resource. If deemed dangerous, all necessary operations will be performed automatically. The rapid response time to new threats and the low level of false positives provided by “cloud” technologies make them indispensable in the antivirus industry.

By gathering and processing data about suspicious activity from each participant in the network, “cloud” protection is, essentially, a powerful expert system designed to analyze cybercriminal activity. The data needed to block the attacks launched against users’ computers are provided to all of the participants in a cloud network, which helps prevent subsequent infection.

“Cloud” technologies make it possible to detect new, as yet undetectable threats, as well as their sources. Unlike normal antivirus updates, algorithms used to detect malicious content are inaccessible to malicious users, rendering them immune from study. The only real drawback that cannot currently be resolved is the dependency of user protection on the existence of a stable connection.

“Сloud” protection has already proven itself to have a number of major advantages: it identifies and blocks new threats at a very high rate, and it doesn’t only block threats — it also blocks the sources spreading them. This helps us envisage a new direction of development in the antivirus industry”, stated Yury Mashevsky. “Furthermore, all of these advantages can be automated using an expert system with a very low false positive rate. “Clouds” are not just a fad — they are an effective user protection technology. As they develop, their importance and role within the antivirus industry will continue to grow.”

In 2008, Kaspersky Lab was the first antivirus developer to launch a new product for home users featuring integrated ‘Cloud Security Technologies’ – Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. “Cloud” security technologies are integrated into Каspersky Internet Security (version 2009 and later) and Kaspersky Pure and operate by referencing the Kaspersky Security Network.
