SANTA CLARA, Calif., January 11, 2011 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE), today announced the general availability of the McAfee® Enterprise Mobility Management (McAfee® EMM™) 9.5 software. McAfee EMM software now includes integration with the McAfee® ePolicy Orchestrator® (McAfee ePO™) platform, providing customers with unified management of their endpoint, network and data security products. The end-to-end visibility and control provided by the McAfee ePO platform will help IT administrators dramatically strengthen their protection and drive down the cost and complexity of managing their risk and security.

Additional Key New Features and Benefits of McAfee EMM 9.5 Software Include:

“In the last year alone we’ve seen such a range of user devices in our workplace, from smartphones to Apple iPads,” said Sumit Sehgal, information security manager at Riverside Healthcare. “The fact that these devices are mobile means that they’re also easily lost or stolen, introducing risk. McAfee EMM software has really helped us to be able to say ‘yes’ to these devices and manage them as an extension of our security infrastructure. We can now secure and manage mobile devices as we do any other endpoint.”

“Consumerization of IT has changed the way organizations need to think about security,” said Todd Gebhart, McAfee executive vice president and general manager of consumer, mobile and small business. “According to recent McAfee research commissioned by Evaluserve, as many as 41 percent of large organizations have reduced their IT costs and increased productivity by allowing employees to use their personal devices for business. With McAfee EMM software, IT managers can now secure their digital assets against data loss and increased threat vectors with the same control, visibility and security they have with their laptops, desktops, and servers.”

McAfee Enterprise Mobility Management software lets companies extend the data center to smartphones and tablets in the same way that they do so for laptops, leveraging the native capabilities of the device and the enterprise IT infrastructure to deliver native applications. The McAfee Enterprise Mobility Management solution – with its scalable server-centric architecture – lets organizations manage the next generation of mobile devices with the same security, control, and visibility they have with their other endpoints.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., January 13, 2011 – Millions of people worldwide rang in 2011 with the latest in technology gadgets and devices, jumpstarting the New Year with the most innovative smartphones, savviest tablets and PC/Mac laptops on the market. But many consumers neglect to take the necessary steps required to protect themselves from the dangers of cybercrime associated with their new prized-possessions and tech gadgets.

If you were one of the millions of adults and kids who received tech gifts during the holidays, beware. Computer and cybercrimes have risen by more than 22% according to the most recent statistics from 2009. McAfee Labs™ predicts an increase in mobile, social media and PC-based threats in 2011, with cybercrooks finding new ways to do harm via all types of connected devices. And millions of new device owners will become easy targets if they don’t take proactive measures to ensure their security.

Here are some practical tips from McAfee to ensure optimal Internet safety and security in 2011:

For more information or to view a more comprehensive tips report, please contact Andrea Heuer at andrea.heuer@redconsultancy.com or Kim Eichorn at kim_eichorn@mcafee.com

        “STOP. THINK. CONNECT.” Consumer Advice:

STOP. THINK. CONNECT. is the first-ever coordinated message to help all digital citizens stay safer and more secure online. The message was created by an unprecedented coalition of private companies, nonprofits and government organizations.

The coalition advises consumers to STOP. THINK. CONNECT.

When you cross the street, you look both ways so make sure it’s safe. Staying safe on the Internet is similar. It takes some common sense steps — Stop. Think. Connect.

Stop: Before you use the Internet, take time to understand the risks and learn how to spot potential problems.

Think: Take a moment to be certain the path ahead is clear. Watch for warning signs and consider how your actions online could impact your safety, or your families.

Connect: Enjoy the Internet with greater confidence, knowing you’ve taken the right steps to safeguard yourself and your computer.

STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Protect yourself and help keep the web a safer place for everyone.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., December 09, 2010 – McAfee (NYSE: MFE) today announced that leading research firm Gartner, Inc. has placed the company in the “Leaders” quadrant in its “Magic Quadrant for Network Intrusion Prevention System Appliances,” as published on Dec. 6, 2010.1 This is the 5th time in a row that McAfee has been acknowledged as a leader in Gartner’s Network Intrusion Prevention Magic Quadrant.

According to Gartner, vendors listed in the Leaders quadrant “demonstrate balanced progress and effort in all execution and vision categories. Their actions raise the competitive bar for all products in the market, and they can change the course of the industry. To remain leaders, vendors must demonstrate a track record of delivering successfully in enterprise IPS deployments and in winning competitive assessments. Leaders produce products that provide high signature quality and low latency, are innovating with or ahead of customer challenges (such as using endpoint intelligence to make more-efficient detections) and have a range of models. Leaders continually win selections and are consistently visible on enterprise shortlists. However, a leading vendor is not a default choice for every buyer, and clients should not assume that they must buy only from vendors in the Leaders quadrant.”

Factors contributing to a company’s ability to execute include products and services, overall viability, sales and marketing execution, and customer experience. Gartner evaluates a company’s completeness of vision by considering its market understanding, sales and marketing strategy, offering or product strategy, business model, and innovation.

“Customers and partners turn to the McAfee® Network IPS solutions because of our comprehensive, integrated and proven approach to network security,” said Rees Johnson, senior vice president and general manager for network security at McAfee. “Our position in the Leader’s quadrant of this highly-regarded network IPS assessment confirms our relentless commitment to Network IPS and Network Security. Our approach offers both superior protection and decreased maintenance costs.”

Since pioneering the IPS industry with the world’s first purpose-built intrusion detection and prevention appliance, the McAfee® Network Security Platform has continued to raise the bar for next-generation IPS technology. Earlier this quarter, McAfee was recognized in the NSS Labs IPS comparative vendor study, and had the highest accuracy and throughput of any product tested to date.

“We believe the NSS comparative study, combined with Gartner’s independent evaluation of our Network IPS solutions, demonstrates our undisputed leadership in Network IPS and Network Security,” said Johnson.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 18, 2010 – McAfee (NYSE: MFE) today announced that McAfee® WaveSecure for Android was named Software of the Year 2010 by Softwareload, Deutsche Telekom’s software download portal. Nearly 30,000 U.K. software fans voted online for their favorite PC software and mobile apps during October and November 2010 and WaveSecure for Android was chosen as the winner in the Tools category.

“This is the first time we’ve run our Software of the Year Awards in the U.K. and we’re delighted that they fired the imagination of so many people – almost 30,000 voted in the end,” said Dirk Lebzien, head of Softwareload. “It’s interesting to note that audio software, mobile tools and freeware were the areas which generated the most competition. It’s apparent that when it comes to PC software and mobile applications these are the areas that people are most passionate about.”

“Device loss is the most worrisome and likely security incident that consumer mobile users face today,” said Todd Gebhart, executive vice president and general manager of consumer and mobile security, McAfee. “The WaveSecure security service for consumers allows users complete protection and control of their mobile device, anytime and anywhere. We’re honored that Softwareload readers value this technology and chose it as their favorite tool.”

If a phone is lost, the WaveSecure service lets users remotely locate the phone and pinpoint its location via the McAfee WaveSecure web portal or through SMS. If the phone’s been stolen, they can remotely lock it and/or wipe all of the personal data from the device and its external memory cards. The phone will automatically go into lock-down mode if it is used with an unauthorized wireless account and inform a user’s emergency contact of its location. WaveSecure locked phones show a permanent message on the screen explaining how to return the phone to its owner. The application also lets users automatically back up all of the data stored on their phones including text messages and address books.

Softwareload’s U.K. Software of the Year Awards 2010 nominations were carefully selected by a panel of experts, including freelance technology journalists Gordon Kelly and Adrian Bridgwater, Web User magazine’s technology reviews editor Andy Shaw and Softwareload’s international business development manager Daniel Eder.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 17, 2010 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE:MFE) today unveiled its McAfee Threats Report: Third Quarter 2010, which uncovered that average daily malware growth has reached its highest levels, with an average of 60,000 new pieces of malware identified per day, almost quadrupling since 2007. At the same time, spam levels decreased in volume this quarter, both globally and in local geographies. Spam hit a two year low this quarter while malware continued to soar. McAfee identified more than 14 million unique pieces of malware in 2010, one million more than Q3 2009.

One of the most sophisticated pieces of malware that plagued users in Q3 was the Zeus botnet, the malware at the root of U.S. small businesses losing $70 million at the hands of Ukrainian cybercriminals. Most recently, cybercriminals unleashed a Zeus botnet that is aimed at mobile devices and designed to intercept SMS messages to validate transactions. As a result, the criminal can perform all bank transactions, stealing funds from unsuspecting victims. McAfee also saw an increase in email campaigns attempting to deliver the Zeus botnet, under the disguise of the following recognized organization names: eFAX, FedEx, Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, United States Postal Service and Western Union.

Botnet activity remained strong in Q3, the most popular of which, Cutwail, accounted for more than 50 percent of traffic in every country. Cutwail bots engaged in distributed denial-of-service attacks against more than 300 websites, including United States government departments such as the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation, and businesses websites such as Twitter and PayPal.

Although attacks on social media, such as Koobface and AutoRun malware, seem to have leveled off, the attacks have not ended cybercriminal manipulation. Twitter, for example, provides an attacker with information on the most popular terms and trends being discussed. Shortened URL services hide website destinations, disguising malicious links targeted at users searching for these popular terms. In Q3, 60 percent of the top Google search terms returned malicious sites within the first 100 results.

The discovery of the highly-sophisticated Stuxnet worm in July marked the beginning of a new era, and by September, more detailed analysis found that Stuxnet is more than just a spy worm, but a weapon written to sabotage critical infrastructure. Stuxnet has infected thousands of computers of unintended victims from all over the globe. McAfee Global Threat Intelligence technology has tracked the breadth and concentration of Stuxnet infections globally, which were first found in Iran, finding that today India suffers from the greatest concentration of attacks.

“Our Q3 Threat report shows that cybercriminals are not only becoming more saavy, but attacks are becoming increasingly more severe,” said Mike Gallagher, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Global Threat Intelligence for McAfee. “Cybercriminals are doing their homework, and are aware of what’s popular, and what’s insecure. They are attacking mobile devices and social networking sites, so education about user activity online, as well as incorporating the proper security technologies are of utmost importance.”

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 15, 2010 – Consumers would be wise to beware of the most commons scams of the season before heading online to book travel and do holiday shopping. McAfee (NYSE: MFE) today revealed the “Twelve Scams of Christmas” – the 12 most dangerous online scams that computer users should be cautious of this holiday season.

“Scams continue to be big business for cybercriminals who have their sights set on capitalizing on open hearts and wallets this holiday season,” said Dave Marcus, director of security research for McAfee Labs. “As people jump online to look for deals on gifts and travel, it’s important to recognize common scams to safeguard against theft during the busy season ahead.”

        Twelve Scams of Christmas

        1) iPad Offer Scams

With Apple products topping most shopping lists this holiday season, scammers are busy distributing bogus offers for free iPads. McAfee Labs found that in the spam version of the scam consumers are asked to purchase other products and provide their credit card number to get the free iPad. Of course, victims never receive the iPad or the other items, just the headache of reporting a stolen credit card number.

In the social media version of the scam, users take a quiz to win a free iPad and must supply their cell phone number to receive the results. In actuality they are signed up for a cell phone scam that costs $10 a week.

        2) “Help! I’ve Been Robbed” Scam

This travel scam sends phony distress messages to family and friends requesting that money be wired or transferred so that they can get home. McAfee Labs has seen an increase in this scam and predicts its rise during the busy travel season.

        3) Fake Gift Cards

Cybercrooks use social media to promote fake gift card offers with the goal of stealing consumers’ information and money, which is then sold to marketers or used for ID theft.

One recent Facebook scam offered a “free $1,000 Best Buy gift card” to the first 20,000 people who signed up for a Best Buy fan page, which was a look-a-like. To apply for the gift card they had to provide personal information and take a series of quizzes.

        4) Holiday Job Offers

As people seek extra cash for gifts this holiday season, Twitter scams offer dangerous links to high-paying, work-at-home jobs that ask for your personal information, such as your email address, home address and Social Security number to apply for the fake job.

        5) “Smishing”

Cybercrooks are now “smishing,” or sending phishing SMS texts. These texts appear to come from your bank or an online retailer saying that there is something wrong with an account and you have to call a number to verify your account information. In reality, these efforts are merely a ruse to extract valuable personal information from the targets. Cybercrooks know that people are more vulnerable to this scam during the holiday season when consumers are doing more online shopping and checking bank balances frequently.

        6) Suspicious Holiday Rentals

During peak travel times when consumers often look online for affordable holiday rentals, cybercrooks post fake holiday rental sites that ask for down payments on properties by credit card or wire transfer.

        7) Recession Scams Continue

Scammers target vulnerable consumers with recession related scams such as pay-in-advance credit schemes. McAfee Labs has seen a significant number of spam emails advertising prequalified, low-interest loans and credit cards if the recipient pays a processing fee, which goes directly into the scammer’s pocket.

           Grinch-like Greetings

E-cards are a convenient and earth-friendly way to send greetings to friends and family, but cybercriminals load fake versions with links to computer viruses and other malware instead of cheer. According to McAfee Labs, computers may start displaying obscene images, pop-up ads, or even start sending cards to contacts that appear to come from you.

        9) Low Price Traps

Shoppers should be cautious of products offered at prices far below competitors. Cyber scammers use auction sites and fake websites to offer too-good-to-be-true deals with the goal of stealing your money and information.

        10) Charity Scams

The holidays have historically been a prime time for charity scams since it’s a traditional time for giving, and McAfee Labs predicts that this year is no exception. Common ploys include phone calls and spam e-mails asking you to donate to veterans’ charities, children’s causes and relief funds for the latest catastrophe.

        11) Dangerous Holiday Downloads

Holiday-themed screensavers, jingles and animations are an easy way for scammers to spread viruses and other computer threats especially when links come from an email or IM that appears to be from a friend.

        12) Hotel and Airport Wi-fi

During the holidays many people travel and use free wi-fi in places like hotels and airports. This is a tempting time for thieves to hack into networks hoping to find opportunities for theft.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., November 09, 2010 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) announced that the McAfee® Network Security Platform M-8000 appliance scored highest in accuracy and throughput in recent comparative tests from NSS Labs. The results reflect McAfee’s commitment to unparalleled threat protection, network performance and operational excellence – all of which have been externally validated by independent reviewers, labs, analysts, and most importantly, customers.

In the tests, McAfee’s default security effectiveness scored an unprecedented 92 percent. Unlike with other IPS (Intrusion Prevention Systems) solutions, these results indicate that with McAfee IPS, organizations can achieve extremely high protection levels with little or no “tuning” effort. With industry average effectiveness hovering below 50 percent, this could be a game-changer for organizations that are not able to invest countless hours fine-tuning their IPS policies to achieve effective network security.

“McAfee has been a consistent performer in our tests, and this year they raised the bar,” said Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs. “Our test report and analysis, which are based upon real-world use cases and include over 1,100 live exploits, are a requirement for many organizations when deciding which products to purchase. Tuning is an important part of IPS management, and highly effective out-of-the-box policies help organizations achieve better protection with less effort.”

“We chose to use the McAfee Network Security Platform as a substantial component in our Managed Security product line and have been extremely impressed with their Recommended Policy,” says David Wilson, manager of Data Security at PAETEC, a managed provider of Network IPS services. “Tuning an IPS device is as much about avoiding false-positives as it is about blocking additional threats. The out-of-the-box accuracy we see in the McAfee Network Security Platform saves us countless hours each week and saves our customers the pain of unnecessary false positives compared to other solutions we’ve tested.”

For those organizations with the security expertise to tune their network IPS, McAfee scored 95 percent in that category. Highlights in the individual report for the McAfee network IPS solution include:

“This achievement underscores our relentless commitment to network security,” said Rees Johnson, senior vice president and general manager for network security at McAfee. “For more than seven years, McAfee has invested in creating a network security platform to ensure customers receive the best protection possible. Achieving such great scores in this NSS Labs study is a result of that commitment.”

McAfee introduced its groundbreaking, vulnerability-based network IPS in 2003, and since has maintained a keen focus on developing the world’s best network protection for customers. McAfee has engineers around the globe dedicated to the development of the McAfee Network Security Platform. Additionally, a team of 500 plus McAfee Labs researchers provide real-time vulnerability research to power the platform. The McAfee Network Security Platform is available in form factors ranging from 100Mbps for the branch office, to over 10Gbps for the data center and network core.
